I always wanted travel to change me, to turn me into a different person. I was after new ways of seeing and being, not to just observe like a journalist or an anthropologist. Part of the drive was positive - the pull of a beautiful wide world out there - but part was also negative - a yearning to escape from places where I felt I didn’t fit in, as well as from the worries and insecurities of my own mind.
It’s a quest that has led me to some fascinating places and people and many intriguing new experiences over the years. And while these have all been very interesting (OK, a couple maybe also a little regrettable..) there are three practices in particular that I came across on my travels that completely changed my life. So much so that I subsequently spent years becoming qualified to teach them myself, and today I offer one-on-one coaching in the best of what I’ve learned:
These practices can have a rather esoteric reputation, but they’re actually all at heart practical, backed up by science and accessible to anyone willing to give them a try. That’s in fact part of their appeal for me, as I’ve always been very much a practical romantic. What is a bit out of this world though is the transformation they can bring to your daily life, delivering happiness, health and harmony in even the most challenging of circumstances.
The irony of course is that the escape I had long sought in foreign lands ultimately came through things I’d been carrying with me all along - my body, mind, and breath - if only I’d known how to use them properly. But I think I probably never would have had I stayed on more familiar shores. As Henry Miller said, "One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things".
